The DataCenterUPS Contractor Index tracks the supply side of America’s data center buildout: who actually installs, powers, cools, and commissions these facilities. Data below reflects 7,116 published contractor listings across 52 metros and 14 mission-critical trades as of August 2026.
Headline findings
- 7,116 data center contractors are active across the 52 US metros we track — 88 added since June alone.
- Electrical dominates supply; commissioning is scarce. Medium/high-voltage electrical is the largest trade (1,201 firms, 17% of the index) followed by generator services (1,099). At the other end: commissioning (113 firms nationally), white-space cleaning (110), and fuel polishing (134).
- The specialist gap is real even in Tier-1 markets. Metro New York/New Jersey — 378 contractors strong — has exactly one listed white-space cleaning specialist. Phoenix, one of the fastest-growing build markets in the country, has two fuel-polishing firms. Commissioning coverage is three firms or fewer in Houston, Minneapolis, Seattle, and Silicon Valley.
Where the contractors are
| Rank | Market | Listed contractors |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Texas (statewide) | 782 |
| 2 | California (statewide) | 741 |
| 3 | Florida (statewide) | 538 |
| 4 | New York / New Jersey | 378 |
| 5 | Northern Virginia / Ashburn | 314 |
| 6 | Dallas–Fort Worth | 306 |
| 7 | Chicago | 298 |
| 8 | Miami | 294 |
| 9 | Boston | 292 |
| 10 | Los Angeles | 287 |
A notable inversion: Northern Virginia hosts more data center capacity than anywhere on Earth, yet ranks fifth in contractor supply — behind metro New York. Capacity concentrates; the trades that build it don’t concentrate as fast.

The commissioning problem
Every megawatt of the AI buildout ends its construction life in the hands of a commissioning agent — and there are only 113 specialist firms listed nationally, fewer than any trade except white-space cleaning. Four major build markets (Houston, Minneapolis, Seattle, Silicon Valley) have three or fewer. If 2025–26 was the year generator lead times became the bottleneck, commissioning bench depth is a strong candidate for the next one. Operators planning 2027 deliveries should be booking commissioning partners at design lock, not at substantial completion.
Methodology
The DataCenterUPS Contractor Index counts published, verified-listed contractor profiles in the DataCenterUPS.com directory, classified by primary trade and metro service area. Multi-metro firms are counted once nationally and once per metro served. Listings are added through continuous market sweeps and owner claims; inclusion cannot be bought. Next update: Q4 2026.
