U.S. Data Center Contractor Statistics (2026)

As of July 2026, DataCenterUPS.com tracks 8,417 U.S. contractors serving data centers and mission-critical facilities across 29 major metros and 14 specialty trades. The largest market is New York / New Jersey with 425 contractors, followed by Dallas-Fort Worth (355) and Northern Virginia / Ashburn (353). The most common trade is medium/high-voltage electrical work (1,209 contractors, 14.4% of the directory); the scarcest is commissioning, with just 114 firms nationwide (1.4%). All figures below come directly from the DataCenterUPS.com directory database and are refreshed quarterly.

Key findings

  • The top three metros — New York/New Jersey, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Northern Virginia/Ashburn — account for 1,133 contractor listings, about 13.5% of the national total.
  • Generator contractors outnumber UPS service firms roughly 1.5 to 1 (1,137 vs 738) — backup power installation capacity is broader than the specialist fleet that maintains the batteries behind it.
  • Commissioning and load bank testing are the two scarcest trades: 313 firms combined, under 4% of all contractors. Facilities scheduling Tier certification or acceptance testing face the tightest vendor market in the industry.
  • Northern Virginia / Ashburn — “Data Center Alley,” the world’s densest data center corridor — has 353 listed contractors, 1.6× nearby Richmond (215).
  • Electrical work in both voltage classes combined (2,116 firms) represents a quarter of the entire directory — reflecting that power distribution remains the core constraint of data center construction.
